WordPress 3.0 Update!

The 13th major release of WordPress is now available for download (or upgrade within your dashboard). Major new features in this release include a sexy new default theme called Twenty TenTwenty Ten is an incredible FREE WP Template that in my own opinion is really very clean, and easy to work with.  I've tried it out on a few of my Blogs today and I love it.  Check it out!

I was talking to my web guy today about this.  I think he was suggesting waiting a little before updating.  But it does look neat.

I'm still trying to learn about "thesis".

Does this make it obsolete?

Jim, I need for you to update my wordpress blog.  You're much better than I am on this.

I lost my whole blog sometime last year doing an upgrade.  I had to hire someone to recover it for me. Luckily I was backing it up.   I was afraid for a few upgrades after that.  This one went very smooth.  I did it Friday night because I was going to WordCamp on  Saturday.  I just got to play with it a little bit before the WordCamp.  The last session of the day I went to was a WordPress designer from Nashville, he talked about 3.0 and showed us some new stuff.  He is not a fan of the Thesis theme but he said a lot of what 3.0 does is what Thesis does already.  I have Thesis.

Jim, I'm in the process of converting my static website to a word press blog.  It is a huge work in process.  I bought Builders theme but then did not read the fine print telling me I needed to be on a Linux host.  That means I have had to do fixes.  The upgrade to 3.0 finally got my menu working and then the upgrade from builder finally got the new fancy menu options workings.  This is going to take a LONG TIME as I have to make each page off of my website and it has LOTS of pages!  I love the builder theme though!!  Hopefully I can stay with my friend for a host as they are so responsive but if problems keep coming up I might have to move my site which is ALWAYS a HUGE PAIN!

Jim:

I just installed 2.9.2 recently when i put up the dedicated server.

When I did it a custom a theme. When I upload 3.0 I will have to run a second theme until I get the bugs out.

Best

Jim,

When you read my question, just remember the only stupid question is the one not asked.

So here's my question: There are so many sites selling Wordpress.org themes.  Are the free ones like the Twenty Ten you mentioned just as SEO effective?  Is there a best place to get the free Wordpress.org themes?  What is the benefit to a paid theme vs a free theme?  There is so much info out there it becomes very confusing.

PS: Second question: Instructions for setting up the WP.ORG theme-I think I understand that you have to set up hosting and other details like c-Name?  Is there a reliable step by step guide for all that somewhere? Can a rookie do the set up or is it safer to be tech savvy?

Your thoughts and help is greatly appreciated!

Rhonda - it's very easy to setup a wordpress.org theme.  I used bluehost which allows you to download is very easily.  Once you get it downloaded to your host (bluehost just has a button you click to download it) it's just like operating a normal wordpress blog.

I'm using a free theme right now and so far so good.  My SEO is pretty good.  I'm ranking as high as I am with my AR blog.  I like having the content saved on my own site.

Hi David Monsour, I really appreciate your info.  I think I am slowly getting the hang of all the "terminology" and hope to take the plunge soon.  Rhonda

Rhonda Mapp Search Alpharetta GA Homes For Sale (Solid Source Realty)  Many of the themes I use are free, and I have one paid theme that was very reasonable.  I have grown to like it!  Some of the free themes have embedded materials and links that are not to be deleted.  Why advertise someone else?
