Advantages of Owning A Home No HOA - No Homeowners Association Fees

The advantages of owning a home with no HOA or no homeowner’s association are many.  Recently we talked to a client of ours, and he discussed why a subdivision without a homeowner’s association worked so well for him.  Our client was transferred by his company that suddenly downsized. When that happened, he lost his job and position.  Being over 50, he had to find a new employment.  Job opportunities were limited. The jobs he found usually meant a lower pay rate, more hours, was farther away from home, or he had to go back to school out of state for a few weeks to learn the new company culture.  That wasn’t much of an opportunity.  Then it dawned on him. The only viable opportunity was to work for himself, and he could not do that in a subdivision that had restrictive rules and covenants.

Most HOAs won't restrict home-based businesses if clients don't come to the house.

Hi Jim... no doubt there are advantages for some people about living in a non-HOA community. For me personally, having always lived in a property with an HOA, I can't imagine living without one. And Lorrie Semler, REALTOR® in the Dallas area. Call/text 972-416-3417 makes a good point. At the end of the day I "run my business" from my home in an HOA community, but as I don't have clients coming back and forth to the house, it's not an issue.

Hi Jim:

Not having an HOA is a definite advantage in some homeowners' eyes, while others relish them. Either way, it's important to do your due diligence before you buy.

Jim, this is a great post, and know I have one buyer right now looking for a home with no HOA.  He has toys that need to go in the back yard.
