Obama has promised to eliminate government waste and to review personally every program and manager. He will personally make sure that every ineffective government manager is fired and every ineffective program is discontinued.

I heard him say that on NPR yesterday. This would solve things for us.

Well since almost all Alaskan lawmakers are in prison or are heading there save one.. lets not talk about that.

Lets consider the massive debt created by the current administration and how they gave tax breaks 2 times. Thats a huge bill to pass on to the next person. Yet they had no plan to pay it... just pass it on.

I agree about the fear card being played: to the point where we are in dire desperation and this bill is the only thing that can save the earth and must be passed asap.

I think there is a solution, but they are finally doing the right thing by working on the bailout deal more, hopefully cutting the pork out of it and not adding any.

At this point I would hope if you are a serious republican or at least a serious American you would question your party and your leaders. Because questioning your leaders is not treasonous it is patriotic and blind patriotism gets you nowhere.

But putting the fear card at the end of your post is pretty upsetting. This is how this whole proposal was presented. This is how 9/11 was presented. This is how this entire current administration has revolved every single policy around. To equate this to the democrats is wholly misleading. Either you are intentionally trying to mislead people or you have stock in keeping the status quo.

And I guess you are right about the president. He certainly cant control a budget he just spends and spends and he certainly doesnt obey the law! He rewrites the constitution! He is above the law.

I stick to my thoughts on the topic.  It is a fear card, and it is being used for upcoming elections. Look at the overseas financial news this evening.  They are saying that the 700 Billion plan will not fix anything, just postpone the inevitable.  So you can believe what you want to believe, and so can I.   I follow a lot of financial news stories, I have called my representatives this week and they are Republicans and I do not agree with their positions, and I told them so.  I also have a great video on one of my blogs from a fantastic Democratic Congresswoman from Ohio that says the same thing.  View her video below.  I think she got it right.

Jim, Why does Obama want to debate tonight. Why is it so important. Is it that he does not have any real pull in DC that he could influence and stop this madness. I didn't know Paulson was a life long Democrat, gee that speaks volumns. And why was Bush hiring him? The plot thickens...right now I can't trust any of them. This new spending bill is outrageous, I agree, lay folks off, cut the programs that aren't needed. Have they cut one since this all began.

All this socialism is making my stomach turn, of course it all started when everyone had a right to own a home, qualified or not.

I read that the $700 Billion is the maximum credit limit - so it will actually be TRILLIONS which will be moved through this account and paid off over many years.

Roger Hollingsworth - Hey Roger, yes it is true.  I watched the late foreign business news last night at 2 AM in the morning.  It was interesting how to listen to the overseas perspective.  The perspective was "America is postponing the inevitable!" 

As citizens here, most do not want to believe the events that the last 6 years should not have happened.  It was driven by greed, mythical appreaciation that in reality we are now finding was unsustainable.  And now we are coming back to earth!  Sobering.

Perhaps we can stimulate the ground swell of giveing the 700 billion back to the adult population (with strings of how to responsibily spend the money) and watch the economy grow. It actaully has merit.

Jim - I wonder who would go broke if the government did nothing and the investors in Wall St had to take the hit by themselves? Yes there would be a lot of retirement funds gone but how about the fat cats who take, make and move the money from one place to another like a proverbial chess game? The general public are going to and most already are taking a hard hit but it is time for the "big boys" to pay the piper don't you agree? Would a crash of the stock market end the world or just stop the merry go round?

Hi Jim - I agree with you that it is a wonderful thing for the Republicans that broke away to actually be conservatives.  I believe this has a lot to do with the new found rally of conservatives by the Palin pick.  I think she has helped some of the Republicans find their backbone to do the right thing and not just go with the status quo.

The government should not of encourageFannie and Freddie and the whole idea that we were such a great country that we had a obligation to provide for all, even the non credit worthy. This was push by Barney Frank the head of the banking committee for years. He is the head person on the Democratic side of the committee.

Now they forgot their deeds along witht he profiteers deeds.

What were we expecting?

Jim,  This whole mess gets scarier and scarier.  Why can't they just do what they have to do to stabilize things instead of trying to get their own agenda's passed at the same time?  All I see is this country headed down a long tube and right in to the sewer!  I wish I were rich enough to go somewhere else.  I used to be a very patriotic american and I still support the few good things left, but this congressional wrangling is making me sick! Now the Liberals are hitting the rain and saying how wonderful OB is, well I guess we'll see in November won't we!  In the meantime I think I'll sign off the RAIN so I don't barf all over my keyboard!

I have a headache after reading all of this!!!  I think that it is interesting that some people are pointing fingers at the "Democrats" concerning the bailout plan, when it was the "Republican" President who proposed it in the first place.

This is quite the hot potato ---- how do we get the lawmakers to REALLY listen to us?  How do we get corruption out of politics???  Nobama is not the answer -- he is just a part of the corrupt Chicago machine.... just my 2 cents....

Well the first stimulus package worked so well that they want to do it again.  Why not?  We're already socializing everything else.  Let's treat it like drugs being fed to addicts.  Keep 'em hooked and they'll be coming back for more and won't be able to break the habit.
